The commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command (NORAD - USNORTHCOM), Gen. Charles H. Jacoby, Jr. received mission update briefings during his visit to the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and the U.S. Military District of Washington (JFHQ-NCR/MDW) at Fort Lesley J. McNair Nov. 01, 2011.

JFHQ-NCR/MDW commander Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington and members of his staff also described the capabilities and readiness of the Emergency Response Vehicle, Mobile Command Post and Joint Operations Center which assist the command to respond cooperatively with other federal agencies or civilian authorities should they be called on for homeland defense or civil support needs in the National Capital Region (NCR).

JFHQ-NCR is responsible for protecting the District of Columbia and neighboring counties and cities of Maryland and Virginia, including Loudon, Fairfax and Prince William Counties in Virginia. It draws together the existing resources of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and NORAD into a single point headquarters for planning, coordination and execution of its mission.

Operating through JFHQ-NCR, USNORTHCOM coordinates support efforts, as well as the air, land and maritime defense of the National Capital Region, under the command and control of the joint force commander. USNORTHCOM is the combatant command established in 2002 to provide command and control of Department of Defense homeland defense efforts and to coordinate defense support of civil authorities.
