KINGSPORT, Tenn.-The Armament Retooling and Manufacturing Support program is in high gear at Holston Army Ammunition Plant. The official grand opening of the Kingsport Hematology Oncology Facility, the newest ARMS tenant at Holston, took place at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011.
Wellmont eyed the property and decided to lease the former HSAAP administration building after a commissioned study determined possible uses for the property.
The property's location is ideal for Wellmont because it fronts a four-lane highway and is situated close to Interstate 26 making it easily accessible to patients coming from surrounding cities and communities. Equally important, it is close to Holston Valley Medical Center.
Wellmont made a significant investment to extensively renovate the upper floor of the building, and the entire renovation was completed in 13 weeks.
Wellmont's former location contained about 20,000 square feet, of which about 8,000 was designated for infusion services. Now the square footage encompasses 33,000 square feet, with 11,000-12,000 used for infusion services.
In addition, the number of infusion chairs has increased from 30 to 42 and exam rooms from 12 to 21. The new infusion chairs offer heat and massage which is a special bonus to patients. Wall-to-wall windows give patients a view of beautiful Bays Mountain.
The new facility brings all staff into one location with all services on one level.
The American Cancer Society occupies space in the building to dispense wigs and educational materials to patients.
Sue Lindenbusch, Wellmont's Vice President of Oncology, said, "The American Cancer Society performs an important service to patients and their loved ones, so it's only fitting that we incorporate this excellent organization into our facility."
Kingsport Mayor Phillips praised the partnership between local government and the high-quality nonprofit Wellmont Health System stating the partnership "serves to bolster the quality of life for the community."
Brig. Gen. Gustave F. Perna, commanding general of the Joint Munitions Command, toured the new facility when he visited Holston on Oct. 6. Perna was appreciative of the effort undertaken to make patients as comfortable as possible at a stressful time in their lives. He also praised the Holston ARMS program for its successes and encouraged further growth.
The HSAAP/Wellmont partnership is unique and the Holston ARMS team considers Kingsport Hematology Oncology the anchor of Holston's 45-acre business and technology park. The team is actively seeking to market more of the property for medical and commercial uses.
