The U.S. Army chief of staff established the Supply Excellence Award Program in 1984 to recognize excellence in supply operations at various unit and organizational levels. Units are evaluated on their demonstrated success in supervisory and managerial responsibilities in compliance with the Army's standard supply policy and procedures, the Command Supply Discipline Program, and the Army management philosophy.
In the past, SDDC unit's were selected and forwarded directly to the Army-level competition without formal recognition at the command level. According to Bernard Walls, chief, SDDC Logistics Division, that changed in 2009 when SDDC's G1/4 directorate created the SDDC-level Supply Excellence Awards to properly recognize the command's finalists. This is second time the command-level awards have been presented.
SDDC is a unique Army command that delivers world-class, origin-to-destination distribution solutions. Whenever and wherever Soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen are deployed, SDDC is involved in planning and executing the surface delivery of their equipment and supplies.
SDDC is the Army Service Component Command of the U.S. Transportation Command and is a major subordinate command to Army Materiel Command. This relationship links U.S. TRANSCOM's Joint Deployment and Distribution Enterprise and AMC's Materiel Enterprise. The command also partners with the commercial transportation industry as the coordinating link between Department of Defense surface transportation requirements and the capability industry provides.
