ILLESHEIM, Germany - U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach commander Col. Kelly J. Lawler and several new friends broke ground on a new $9.3 million child development center at Storck Barracks in Illesheim Oct. 25.

Several children joined Lawler, garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Ocanas, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation director Dan Riley and Europe Region Army Corps of Engineers chief of construction John Curtis in the groundbreaking for the new CDC.

In his brief remarks before the groundbreaking Lawler said it was "a great day for the garrison" to be able to break ground on the new facility.

When construction is complete the CDC will have 15,815 square feet of space and support up to 126 children ages six weeks to five years old.

The new CDC should be completed by May 2013. It replaces two smaller facilities at Storck. It is next to the new School Age Services center that opened a few months ago and within walking distance of the stairwells.

The new facility will have an adjacent outdoor play area, activity rooms for the children, an Active Play and Outreach Transition Care Room, a reception area, a patron and visitor waiting area, restrooms, an isolation area for sick children, administrative offices, staff lounge and training room.

Families who live in Ansbach will also get a new CDC soon. The garrison breaks ground on the new Katterbach CDC on Monday Oct. 31. Construction should be finished by November 2013.
