Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall colleagues, friends and dignitaries gathered at Spates Community Club to recognize NCO of the Year Staff Sgt. Michael Williams and Soldier of the Year Spc. Sarah Deckert. The annual awards went to Deckert, who is a food service specialist for the Pentagon Army Executive Dining Facility, and to Williams, the assistant NCOIC of the Primary Care department at Andrew Rader Clinic.
The featured speaker was retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmie W. Spencer, who told Williams, Deckert and the audience, that their military roles have now changed and will stay with them throughout their Army tenures.
"You have set a new standard for yourself; you have showed that you are capable and competent," Spencer remarked. "You are now a role model for other people. Give serious consideration to your legacy. It is a blank page yet to be written."
Deckert's and Williams' military legacy pages are filling at a rapid pace. Williams, a native of Worchester, Mass., is a six-year Army veteran, and has taken part in three Operation Iraqi Freedom deployments. The Rader Clinic staff sergeant's goals are to become an Army registered nurse and retire from the military.
Colorado-born Deckert is striving to earn a master's degree in adult education and to retire from the Army as a command sergeant major. She mentioned that receiving the Soldier of the year award was a privilege she totally plans to respect.
