DPW employees receive awards for efficiency in hurricane aftermath

By U.S. ArmyOctober 27, 2011

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Twenty-four Department of Public Works employees received Special Act Awards from U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Center Commander Col. Jeffery Holt for the hard work and dedication they exhibited in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

The cleanup, which lasted four days, included tree removal and repairing overhead electric lines in difficult conditions, like standing water.

During an Oct. 24 presentation ceremony at the APG Garrison Headquarters, Holt remarked that DPW exceeded expectations. Immediately after the storm, it was estimated by Garrison APG Commander Col. Orlando Ortiz that it would take at least two weeks for the post to regain power.

"Given the critical testing we were doing at the time, being without power for weeks would have made a significant impact on our mission, and other missions on post," Holt said. "The quick turnaround in repair time was quite astounding. This is just one more example of how DPW has given us great support. They are a multitalented bunch."
