Col. Joseph N. Gaines, U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll commander, fifth from left, hosted a visit by Maj. Gen. Hiroaki Maehara, Japanese Self Defense Force, Air Defense Headquarters, to Gaines' right, and his staff Oct. 19. Maehara was transiting USAKA on a gas-n-go.
Gaines provided the group a tour of the island, and while touring, he discussed both U.S. and Japanese history on Kwajalein between 1914 and 1942 and pointed out several historic structures that have survived. Maehara and group also visited a Japanese memorial site on the island to render honors to the Japanese war dead.
