Radford, Va.-During his whirlwind tour of the Joint Munitions Command's installations, Brig. Gen. Gustave F. Perna, commanding general, visited Radford Army Ammunition Plant on 7 October 2011.
Lt. Col. Byron Penland, RFAAP's commander, gave a safety briefing and staff presented RFAAP's fiscal year 2012 goals and plans to Perna.
To further motivate the staff in their goals and plans, Perna urged, "We're [JMC] on a lifeboat moving forward. We want to be a rower, a part of the success of the ammunition enterprise. Drive your own destiny. Articulate what others don't know about you," he said.
Perna presented Team Radford with an Excellence in Explosive Safety award, a prestigious Army battalion-level award that recognizes a documented record of production safety utilizing various best-practices to help assure the safe operation of Radford's 70-year-old chemical and propellant manufacturing facility.
Perna took a windshield tour of Radford highlighted by a stop at the New Fire and Emergency Services Center. There he recognized wounded warriors who were participating in a special deer bow-hunt on the installation. Perna greeted and visited with each Wounded Warrior and presented each with his commander's coin as a symbol of his appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our Nation.
Finally, before departing Radford, Perna also toured its highly-esteemed military family housing area, Staff Village.
"We were thrilled to have BG Perna back at RFAAP and update him on the phenomenal work being done by 'Team Radford,'" said Penland. "Everyone was also especially excited that he was able to personally meet and greet and interact with some of the Wounded Warrior veterans. It was a great opportunity to learn and gain knowledge from their collective combat experiences."
