WIESBADEN, Germany - The new Warrior Zone on Wiesbaden Army Airfield is a haven for single Soldiers.
"It looks really nice," said Spc. Gerardo Bahena, Wiesbaden Health Clinic. "It has air conditioning, and it is a place where you can come and escape after a long work day."
The Warrior Zone features a state of the art theater, two flat screen televisions, a nine-station computer lab and a five-station gaming area complete with the latest in seating technology. It also adjoins U'R Place Bar and Grill, which offers a variety of food choices, has a fully operational bar, a pool table, and indoor and outdoor seating.
"Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers is a wonderful program for single Soldiers," said Pfc. Jennifer Rogers, garrison chaplain's assistant, "Being in Europe can be difficult without family around. I expect to frequent the Warrior Zone quite a bit -- especially the theater room."
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Command Sgt. Maj. Hector Prince said he hopes the Warrior Zone can become much more than just a fun place to hang out. At a ribbon -cutting ceremony for the grand opening Sept. 29, Prince issued a call to senior leaders to stop by and get to know the young Soldiers.
"When I was a private we didn't have a building like this. … I encourage leadership to come down and interact with the young Soldiers here," said Prince. "I want the single Soldiers to know that the senior leaders support them -- we are here for you."
Anyone who has undergone a permanent change of station move knows the mixed emotions that come with arriving at an unfamiliar duty station. BOSS attempts to ease the transition and incorporation of single Soldiers into a community that is very often family focused.
BOSS provides a link between the single Soldier and the community through activism, professional mentoring and travel. It gives Soldiers the opportunity to see Europe and foster relationships with fellow Soldiers by coordinating travel excursions, participating in community service events and actively seeking opportunities to participate in installation-wide events.
"The single Soldier is a part of the community," said Cpl. Lamonte Hargraves, BOSS president. "Through the BOSS program we have the opportunity to visibly impact the growth and development of our installation."
Andre Herren, who serves as the civilian BOSS adviser, said, "BOSS balances fun, community and the European experience. It also gives Soldiers the opportunity to enjoy themselves on post in a safe environment."
The Warrior Zone is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., weekends and federal holidays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
BOSS meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 3:30 p.m. in the Warrior Zone in Building 1214 on Wiesbaden Army Airfield. All interested persons are encouraged to participate.
