Nominated for their performance and impact on the mission, Sgt. 1st Class Sol NevarezBerrios and Staff Sgt. Brian Prather have been selected as the U.S. Air Force's 902nd Contracting Squadron senior non-commissioned officer and non-commissioned officer of the quarter.
NevarezBerrios and Prather are members of the 410th Contracting Support Brigade's 713th Contingency Contracting Team, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, working with the 902nd at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
According to NevarezBerrios, the Air Force NCO of the Quarter selection process differs drastically from the basic Army programs.
"Their boards are not face-to-face, like ours. Three areas are evaluated: your technical skills through job performance, your community involvement and your self-development," said NevarezBerrios, a 12-year-Army veteran. "These give it a whole-person concept that measures not only what you do but how you impact the team."
Prather has one word for working with the Air Force.
"Fantastic! The Air Force officers, NCOs and civilians have been the most supportive, informative and knowledgeable team members to learn my job from," he said. "I have learned so much more here for contracts over the simplified acquisition threshold, the awarding process, in depth procedures on all contracts from commodities, General Service Administration, services, modifications and notice of assignments.
In addition to her selection as senior NCO of the quarter, NevarezBerrios garnered distinguished honor graduate rankings at the Army Acquisition Center of Excellence Senior Leader Course in August where she also served as the class leader.
NevarezBerrios endured the physical demands and academic challenges in addition to the extra time needed to manage the team during the six-week NCO resident course. As the class leader, she led by example maintaining daily accountability of her Soldiers and conducting after-hours study groups to help her peers. During the Train-the-Trainer Course, she presented effective contracting officer representative instruction with her knowledge of the contracting process and administration.
NevarezBerrios moved forward within her SLC course to join a class of field grade officers attending the Army Acquisition Intermediate Contracting Course where she achieved the highest academic score of 96.3 during the four-week graduate-level course. The course is designed to provide Army acquisition workforce officers and NCOs with Defense Acquisition University Level 2 equivalency contracting training in intermediate contracting processes and methodology.
