Staff Sgt. Michael Drake, Delta Company, 1/3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and Staff Sgt. Scedric Moss, 902nd Military Intelligence Group, were inducted into the U.S. Army Military District of Washington (MDW) Sergeant Audie Murphy Club during a ceremony held at Fort McNair, Oct. 6, 2011.

The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club at MDW is one chapter of an elite organization of noncommissioned officers whose performance and leadership qualities distinguish them among their cohort, as those of the club's namesake did on the battlefields of World War II. The stars that separate the initials of the club -- S*A*M*C -- stand for the watchwords of the NCO: "Be, Know and Do."

The club is named after Audie Leon Murphy who is one of the most decorated Soldiers in American history.

Two Honorary Inductions were made during the ceremony as well. They were 1st. Sgt. James Taylor, HHC, 12th Aviation Battalion and Command Sgt. Maj. William Yeargan, 12th Aviation Battalion.

Honorary membership is extended to select Soldiers who fit the image of a SAMC member but would not normally be allowed to compete due to extenuating circumstances. Careful evaluation taken by the Club's approving authority to ensure that the spirit and intent of the program is preserved.

Also, the Dr. Mary E. Walker Award was presented to Tracey Eastwood, and Kasey Martin, both nominated by the U. S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).

The Dr. Mary E. Walker (DRMEW) award is a reward for Army spouses whose achievements and performance merit special recognition. The DRMEW award is a means of recognizing those who have contributed significantly to the quality of life for soldiers, exemplifying personal concern for the needs, training, development and welfare of Soldiers and concern for families of Soldiers.

Dr. Mary E. Walker is the only woman in United States history to receive the Medal of Honor. She was a humanitarian devoted to the care and treatment of the sick and wounded during the Civil War, often at the risk of her own life, serving as a volunteer field surgeon.

The ceremony was hosted by MDW Chief of Staff, Col. Patrick T. Warren, and the guest speaker was Command Sgt. Maj. (Ret) George L. Horvath, one of the originators of the Audio Murphy club. The original club started at Fort Hood, Texas early in 1986.

All MDW active Army components, Army Reserve and National Guard NCOs in the rank of Corporal through Sgt. 1st. Class, who directly supervise at least two Soldiers, are eligible to compete for membership in the MDW SAMC.
