In this third Global Reporting Initiative based public report, the Army describes its efforts and progress in 2009 to further integrate and coordinate sustainability Army-wide to protect reliable access to energy, water and other natural resources and to preserve strategic choice and operational flexibility into the future.

To the Army, sustainability is an organizing principle that factors mission, environment, community and economic benefit into each of its decisions and activities with the objective of meeting current and future mission requirements worldwide, safeguarding human health, improving the quality of life and enhancing the natural environment.

During 2009, the Army framed four tenets of sustainability-- materiel, readiness, human capital and services and infrastructure--that will serve as a road map to relate ongoing and new sustainability efforts moving forward.
