Another Red River Army Depot pilot program has ended in great success. The RRAD Fabrication Division recently completed reset work of three Improved Ribbon Bridges and all of their components.
The bridges are used by the armed forces to cross waterways. Most notably, U.S. forces used the bridges to cross the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In 2010, the bridges were used to assist with cleaning up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
After completion of the pilot program, the employees of the Fabrication Division transported the bridges to Lake Wright Patman for testing. The bridges must be floated and assembled as if they were being used by the armed forces.
"TACOM representatives were here with us when we tested the bridges and everyone was very impressed with the outcome," said Jimmy Reed, chief of the Fabrication Division.
In FY11 the division is scheduled to reset 30 bridges, which includes 42 bridge adapter pallets and 12 interior ramp bays.
"The success of this pilot program is due to the men and women who are actually on the shop floor turning the wrench each day," said Reed. "When we received the program they all took a great interest in it and worked really hard to get it done."
