FORT STEWART, Ga. - Eating healthy is very important, especially in your adolescent years.
Having a healthy eating diet helps provide the necessary nutrients your body needs to create new cells, clean toxins and to function every day. It also gives you more energy and helps you stay more alert.
When you're a teenager, often times it is more difficult to stick to a healthy eating diet. With many things going on such as school, hanging with friends, fast food restaurants and snacking it can lead to excessive intake of sugars, fats and calories, also an insufficient intake of minerals and vitamins.
During puberty, the body has more of a need for calories and nutrients including calcium, protein and iron. Calcium and iron are also important nutrients for an adolescence body. There are also healthy eating tips that can help you have healthy eating habits. Learning how to eat healthy now, can help lower your risks of any types of diseases in the future.
Tips on how to promote healthy eating:
• Having regular Family meals- Knowing that dinner will be served the same time every night and the whole Family will be eating together enhances appetite.
• Limit portion sizes- Use smaller plates and bowls and never use food as a reward or bribe.
• Cook more meals at home- Cooking at home is much healthier. Restaurant meals have more salt, sugar and fat.
You do not have to give up your favorite foods such as burgers, French fries and pizza but you just have to practice eating in moderation or making healthier substitutes. Some healthier alternatives can be turkey meat; instead of using beef, you can cook and season the turkey meat and it will taste just as good. Also, instead of eating regular french fries, try sweet potato fries! Make sure to eat more fruits, vegetables, lean meats and poultry when choosing your food selection.
Making these small changes is not as difficult as it may seem but the results in the long-run will be worth it!
