HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Lt. Gen. Dennis L. Via, deputy commanding general of the
U.S. Army Materiel Command spoke at the annual Space and Missile Defense
Conference here, Aug. 18.
"As the AMC deputy commanding general I stand in awe of the expanding
mission AMC has," Via said.
AMC has more than 70,000 military and civilian employees worldwide, a budget
of 49 billion in fiscal year 2010, and has a presence in or impacts 150
countries and all 50 states.
"We're utilizing BRAC and the move to Redstone to transform this
headquarters to do things differently, to be adaptive and relevant and to
prepare ourselves for what we see in the future," Via said.
BRAC affected one out of every six employees, Via said. The move was
completed without any mission degradation.
"We think it is a tremendous opportunity now that we are here where the
Space and Missile Defense Command is located along with all the other
commands and organizations that are here to bring synergy as we move
forward," Via said.
AMC supports the missile commodity that SMDC provides like it supports all
other commodities the Army needs.
AMC's missile specific support includes field support, contracting, life
cycle management, research and development, depot maintenance, reliability
maintenance, strategic transportation and foreign military sales.
Via also explained AMC's effort to transform while supporting current
operations, and delivering the decisive edge to the Soldier.
"AMC is SMDC's partner. We want to look at ways we can build on the synergy
that we have here now," Via said.
"We are going to be agile, we are responsible, we are going to adapt, and we
are ready to move forward," Via said. "At the end of the day, it's about
transforming challenges into future opportunities."
