FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Veteran actress and movie producer Lea Thompson visited Fort Carson July 29 to attend the free viewing of her new movie, “Mayor Cupcake,” a story of a small-town baker elected to office. Thompson signed autographs at the post exchange and met with fans and the military community Saturday.

“I wanted to thank our troops for their service,” Thompson said. “Every bit helps and if I can make one person smile, then my job is done.”

An actress for 30 years, Thompson earned accolades in films like “Back to the Future,” “Red Dawn” and “The Beverly Hillbillies,” among many others.

In “Mayor Cupcake,” Thompson stars as Mary Maroni, a cupcake baker who becomes mayor of her small town. Hesitant at first, she takes on the position in full force and begins making changes to improve the town’s outstanding debt.

“The movie is extremely topical,” said Thompson, who both starred in and served as executive producer of the film. “When you do something at the local level we realize that each of us (has) the power to fix our many problems.”

Thompson’s character in the movie encourages communities to be responsible for what is going on in their own neighborhood and to take charge at the local level.

“The movie was very relevant to what’s going on in the world today with all the budget cuts,” said Kathy Pleshek, who watched the movie with her husband, Barry Pleshek. “It was a great movie; we enjoyed it.”

The morning after the movie screening, Thompson headed to the PX to sign posters of “Mayor Cupcake,” along with other memorabilia brought by fans.

“We have a copy of every movie she has ever been in,” said Laurnel Niemann. “My kids love her, too … we were so excited to meet her.”

Fort Carson village mayors mingled and took pictures with Thompson before she met with the community.

“It’s been a great experience to see all the camaraderie around the post,” Thompson said.
