Stallions receive awards for valor

Col. Paul E. Funk II, commander, 1st "Ironhorse" Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division presents the Army Commendation Medal with "V" device to Highlands Ranch, Colo. native Capt. Corey Wallace, executive officer of Company D, 2nd "Stallion" Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, during an award ceremony at Camp Taji, Iraq Nov. 23. Wallace received the medal for valor for actions taken Feb. 19 after an enemy attack on a joint security station in Tarmiyah, Iraq. While under fire, Wallace helped to move wounded and dazed Soldiers out of danger and through his leadership, prevented the enemy from overrunning his troops' position.

Byington received the award for valor for actions he took while under fire during an enemy attack in Tarmiyah, Iraq Feb. 19. In addition to this award, Byington also received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in the engagement.

Garcia received the award for helping to pull security and evacuate his fellow Soldiers during an enemy attack in Tarmiyah, Iraq Feb. 19.
