KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 3, 2011 -- A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents during a search for an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator in the Khanabad district of Afghanistan’s Kunduz province yesterday, military officials reported.

The targeted facilitator is responsible for coordinating suicide attacks throughout the province. The security force was threatened by two armed insurgents. The force engaged the two men, killing them.

In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader and one of his associates during an operation in the Shah Joy district of Zabul province. The leader provided support to other Taliban leaders and fighters in the Arghandab district and facilitated movement of foreign fighters. He also trained insurgents to construct roadside bombs.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one Taliban facilitator during a security operation in the Zharay district of Kandahar province. The facilitator was responsible for the movement of narcotics and also assisted in roadside bomb attacks.

-- Also in Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspects during a clearance operation in the Spin Boldak district.

-- In the Maiwand district, a combined Afghan and coalition force seized a drug cache containing 220 pounds of marijuana.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspects during a security operation in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. The target of the operation was a Taliban leader responsible for insurgent actions in the area.

-- In the Zurmat district of Paktiya province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network leader. The leader was responsible for attacks against Afghan army checkpoints.
