ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. " Associates from Army Contracting Command, Anniston Army Depot Contracting Office, received the Alabama Association of Rehabilitation Facilities Business Award for outstanding achievements in hiring practices and personnel development with regard to persons with disabilities June 28 at the Marriott Grand National Hotel in Opelika, Ala.
Mike Almaroad of The Opportunity Center-Easter Seal presented the award. The Opportunity Center-Easter Seal Community Rehabilitation Program is a training and employment resource located in Anniston, Ala.
The center is owned and operated by the Alabama Easter Seal Society and is an agency of the United Way.
The primary goal of The Opportunity Center is to enable disabled individuals to develop personally and vocationally and to learn skills and work habits necessary to obtain and maintain competitive employment.
In 2000, Anniston Army Depot began a contractual relationship with the Opportunity Center by awarding an AbilityOne contract to the center for laundry services.
AbilityOne is a federally mandated program through which federal installations may award noncompetitive contracts to nonprofit organizations in order to comply with the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act.
This contract was the first of many contractual agreements, providing employment opportunities through The Opportunity Center for individuals who are classified as having a severe disability.
In 2001, a contract for janitorial services was awarded through the AbilityOne program and over 60 people were employed to provide a substantial service to the installation.
In August 2010, 50 administrative clerks were brought to the depot to assist with the installation’s implementation of the Logistics Modernization Program.
These administrative clerks were responsible for reporting production confirmations within the LMP system and for reporting and tracking of time and attendance records within the depot’s many electronic computer systems.
This latest effort is an example of the varied and innovative business solutions which serve to make both The Opportunity Center and Anniston Army Depot more efficient and effective in the ever-changing business environment for years to come.

Land, division chief for the Production Contracts Division of the Contracting Office and Maj. Jeffery T. Lewis, deputy director of contracting, accepted the award on behalf of the Contracting Office.
Other DOC associates present were Barbara Gunter, Purchasing Agent, as well as contract specialists Cassandra Hughes, Joshua Allen and T. Morey Gaddy.
