As a journalist whose goal it is to tell the truth, I admit I have somewhat failed, at least when it came to the above headline. Of course, people who know me would realize that me becoming a father would require some female willing to bear my young, and the odds of finding one to do so are slightly less than the odds of Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem staying open.

However, in my defense, the headline is true, as a certain Jedi master would say, from a certain point of view. Last week, I wrote about Spartacus, an abused chihuahua who came into the Hillside Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) animal shelter in Pottsville, Pa., and the time I spent with him. Some people wondered what happened to him afterward and if I adopted him.

Well, I am proud to say that I will become a “father” by adopting him this weekend. I have been in contact with the shelter over the past week checking in on Spartacus’ progress. The SPCA would not adopt him out until he was neutered (and couldn’t become a father himself) and he was checked out by a veterinarian.

Thankfully, his surgery was a success and he was cleared as healthy by the vet. He also received all his shots, with the exception of rabies, which must be administered by a Georgia veterinarian, since he will be living here.

I’ll be picking him up July 17, and by Monday afternoon, he should be at my apartment, getting spoiled and trying out the comfy blue dog bed and red felt blanket he’ll get in his welcome home package. He’ll get to try on his new collar, complete with a name tag with my contact info on it, and explore the neighborhood on the end of a flexi-leash. And when the adventure leads back inside, he’ll have a box of squeaky plush toys, balls and beanie babies to chew up, and a playmate in Charlie. But most importantly, he’ll have lots of love.
