A major milestone in the history of the TACOM LCMC occurred June 17 at the Detroit Arsenal as Commanding General Kurt Stein officially opened the new administration building, building 270, in conjunction with the Army’s 236th birthday. Earlier that morning, Paul W. Smith, from WJR radio in Detroit, broadcast his morning show live from the Detroit Arsenal. This was the first ever live radio broadcast that had taken place at the Arsenal.
The weather was perfect for the occasion as a large crowd gathered in the parking lot in front of building 270 to witness the celebration. A number of local leaders and distinguished guests were present, including the senior U.S. Senator from Michigan, Carl Levin, U.S. Congressman Sander Levin, and Glenn Granger, President of Granger Construction Company, who all spoke during the program. Also featured were the Detroit Public Schools Jazz Band, who entertained the audience immediately prior to the program, Devin Skillion, from WDIV TV Channel 4, who served as Master of Ceremonies, TACOM LCMC Chaplain Assistant Sgt. David Teakell, who sang the National Anthem and delivered the invocation, and a choir from Stony Creek High School, who concluded the program by singing a medley of all the military service songs.
