Sixty-eight archers from seven units participated in the 2011 intramural archery tournament June 6 to 9 at the Outdoor Recreation archery range.

“We had several more teams this year,” Terry Gibson, ODR recreation assistant, said. “There were also a lot of our regular shooters in the tournament this year who come in on their own time and shoot at the range. I hope we can get more units to come out and get excited about this next year.”

Brian Henson, team captain for Defense Threat Reduction Agency, participated in the tournament for the first time. He is a bowhunter in his spare time, and he said his appreciation for the sport moved him to sign up for the intramural competition this year.

“It’s really nice to have an indoor range to use here,” he said. “You can get plenty of practice time, and (Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation) has a great facility. Everyone here is great.”

Even though Hanson hadn’t contended for the Commander’s Cup trophy before, he was still aware of the intense competition between his opponents.

“Archery is kind of an individual sport, but it’s pretty easy to feel this overwhelming competitiveness when you step up there to the line with other archers,” he said. “It really pushes you to do your best up there.

“I was definitely trying to win,” Hanson continued. “Winning is always a goal for me.”

DTRA repeated as the team champion this year with 44 points. Four of the top eight finishers also came from the unit, including top honors in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The win, Hanson said, is a testament to DTRA’s cohesiveness.

“None of us are forced to get out there and do this kind of thing, but we’ve always had this team mentality,” he said. “We go out there and do everything with a team effort.”
