The Bayonet’s Vince Little took first place in the Georgia Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest in the News Photo category for Division I.
The photo, published in the paper’s May 28, 2010, edition, showed an officer candidate assembling the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall at the National Infantry Museum.
Little, who received the award Friday at Jekyll Island, Ga., said the award surprised him.
“Going back 20 years in the newspaper business, I’ve always considered myself a stronger writer than photographer, so it’s a little surprising a photo of mine would get picked for an award,” Little said. “I certainly don’t think I’m the best shooter on this staff, but it’s nice to be recognized.
“Having a hallowed subject like the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall made it much easier for me, and I’ve always gotten great support from my colleagues here. I was really happy to see The Bayonet place so high in the newspaper categories. That was a tremendous showing for our first year in the GPA contest. There are some talented individuals on this staff. It's a privilege to work with them.”
The Bayonet placed in four other categories " second place in Layout and Design, third place in Page One, third place in Local News Coverage and third place in Special Issues, the Best Ranger supplement.
Monica Manganaro, deputy public affairs officer, said she was proud The Bayonet and its staff did well in the Better Newspaper Contest.
“The recognition is well deserved,” she said. “The staff puts a lot of heart into their work each week telling the Fort Benning Army story.”
“I am proud of all of our staff for being recognized as one of the best weekly newspapers in the state,” said John W. Peeler, assistant editor. “The awards definitely say something about the relevance and quality of the product we produce for the great Soldiers, Families and community we cover.
