What better way to celebrate the 236th Army Birthday then to have the smell of BBQ permeating the air, music playing in the background.
Veterans and supporters gathered at Fort Detrick’s historical Nallin Farm Pond where it was transformed into a vibrant and energized celebration June 11 to recognize and thank wounded warriors and their families for their dedication. With the help of the Maryland Cattleman’s Association, Nam Knights, Barley and Hops and so many other volunteers, the support and love for those who serve and this country was evident.
The Nam Knights provided a motorcycle escort for the buses who came from Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Medical Center. Together they drove up 270 to Frederick, Md. where they were welcomed by active and retired military as well as their families, friends and supporters.
For the third year, Fort Detrick has hosted a Wounded Warrior Appreciation BBQ. Added this year was a BBQ cook-off which attracted several teams, all of which proved their skills and charmed the judges.
The event which drew several hundred also recognized the vice president of Operation Second Chance, Marine Sgt. Adam Kisielewski. He lost his left arm and right leg in an attack in Iraq. Kisielewski worked on Fort Detrick before becoming the organization’s vice president. During his recognition, he commented on the importance of support when you are injured and arrive home and thanked everyone.
“It is through organizations such as Operation Second Chance that communities can provide support and essentials to our wounded warriors and their families,” said Kisielewski.
Everyone came together to give warriors a time away from the rigorous schedules associated with hospitals and rehabilitation. Veterans were eager to reach out their hands for a shake or to offer assistance. Families were so thankful to see their sons or daughters relax and have fun. Most of all everyone in attendance was there to support each other and ultimately say ‘Thank You’.
