FORT BELVOIR, Va., - Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey J. Mellinger became the 13th command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Materiel Command in a change of responsibility ceremony here Nov. 2 at AMC headquarters.
Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel K. Elder, who held the position since 2005, retired during the same ceremony.
Mellinger was the command sergeant major for the Multi-National Force-Iraq from August 2004 - May 2007 and was recently stationed at U.S. Army Alaska since May. Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel K. Elder relinquished responsibility and will retire with his wife Gloria to San Antonio, Texas.
AMC Commander, Gen. Benjamin S. Griffin, thanked Elder for his outstanding support to all service members and civilians. He said Elder's role as the senior enlisted logistician for AMC was critical to what AMC does in providing support to service members.
"Command Sgt. Maj. Elder traveled throughout the command, fixing problems. He is a great leader and mentor to AMC NCOs as well as NCOs around the world, through his publications, web site bulletins and hands-on leadership style. He gained valuable feedback to help us provide better support to the warfighter."
As he welcomed the incoming command sergeant major, Griffin noted he worked with Mellinger nearly 10 years ago on a project during Operation Desert Storm.
"Command Sgt. Maj. Mellinger now comes to us in a very dynamic time as AMC is changing, moving and relocating while maintaining dedicated support to our warfighters. "
Remarking on Mellinger's recent deployment to Iraq, Griffin added, "No one understands better what our Soldiers need."
Referring to his time in Iraq, Mellinger said, "I was a recipient of the efforts of this command. I am in awe of what this command does for our Soldiers. I asked to be here."
