Under Secretary of the Army Joseph Westphal saluted Hispanic women leaders serving the nation by hosting the U.S. Army Military District of Washington’s Twilight Tattoo June 1st at Fort McNair, D.C.

Among the many honored guests at the reception prior to the show were Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the American Ambassador to El Salvador Mari Carmen Aporte and the commander of Program Executive Officer Soldier, Brigadier General Camille M. Nichols. Nichols’ command provides Soldiers with their uniforms and gear.

“We are dedicating this evening’s Tattoo to Hispanic women leaders and the service they have rendered to our Nation,” said Westphal at the reception. Due to severe weather in the National Capital Region, select elements of the Twilight Tattoo performance were moved indoors and performed in the Rotunda of the National War College, also at Fort McNair.

“Like so many others, I benefitted from my parents decision to immigrate to the United States. We came from Chile. The opportunities and liberties I have enjoyed came directly from my father’s hard work,” said Westphal. “Over the centuries, the United States has prospered because of the talents, skills and dedicated service of Hispanic leaders.”

The Twilight Tattoo is an hour-long military pageant featuring Soldiers from The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” and is produced by the Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington. Audiences experience a glimpse into American history through performances by The U.S. Army Blues, vocalists from The U.S. Army Band Downrange, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, and The U.S. Army Drill Team.

There is still one more Twilight Tattoo scheduled at Fort McNair in 2011, and that will be Wednesday June 8. For those unable to make it you may watch a live stream of it at http://twilight.mdw.army.mil/livestream.htm
