Seven students received scholarships from the Rock Island Arsenal Welcome Club at a ceremonial luncheon May 18 at Arsenal Island Golf Course clubhouse.

Receiving the scholarships were high school graduates Sophie Brown, West High School; Adam Hay, Moline High School; Anna Pienta; Rock Island High School; and Micaela Terronez, Alleman High School.

Continuing education recipients of the scholarships were Ann Abney, Carroll University; Andrea Mickelson, Drake University; and Megan Reilly, Eastern Illinois University.

Maj. Gen. Yves Fontaine, commander of Army Sustainment Command, presented coins and shook hands with the scholarship recipients.

Glenda Easter, president of the RIAWC, said the scholarships are awarded based on the students' submitted essays, academic achievements and transcripts.

Easter said funding for the scholarship program comes from several sources, but key among them are the operation of the Arsenal Attic Thrift shop in Bldg. 60 at Rock Island Arsenal, and the annual Golf Outing held at the Arsenal Island Golf Course.

"This year the Arsenal Attic and Golf Outing raised $16,000 for the scholarship and community support programs," Easter said.

Easter said this year's Golf Outing is scheduled for Aug. 3. Additional information about the golf outing can be found at the Welcome Club website www.riawc.org.

Susan Perna, advisor to the Arsenal Attic Thrift Shops and Scholarship, and spouse of Brig. Gen. Gustave Perna, commander of Joint Munitions Command, said the RIAWC has undergone a name change.

"We used to be the Rock Island Arsenal Women's Club," she said.

The 105-member club is a non-profit organization that supports scholarship and charitable work for military members, their families and military, local and national charities. Over the last 60 years, RIAWC has provided scholarships and supported the Army Distaff Foundation, National Military Family Association, the Association of the United States Army, the National Military Family Association and many others.

Easter and Perna said the Arsenal Attic will close June 3, but reopen July 12 for sales and consignments. They offered special congratulations to the shop's 2010 Volunteer of the Year, Pixie Gilliam.
