ADELPHI, Md. - Two U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command organizations have partnered to answer the 'Call to Duty' for the Route Clearance Vehicle Expedient Armor upgrades.
The U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center and the U.S. Army Research Lab collaborated to troubleshoot and improve vehicle armor used in the field.
TARDEC and ARL challenged to find an armor solution that was capable of defeating the explosively formed projectile threat, could be used on the entire family of vehicles and that was light enough for the vehicles to carry efficiently.
After ARL researched several possibilities through modeling, simulation and coupon testing, results for the new armor were generated and ready to be tested.
TARDEC and the Aberdeen Testing Center designed armor that could be applied to a variety of vehicles, and configured a final armor solution based on each Route Clearance Vehicle's base armor to defeat the threat. The new armor is lightweight to be efficiently carried.
ARL and TARDEC's timely completion of this project provides Soldiers with added protection, as the threat continues to emerge. Eight updated armored vehicles will be delivered to theater, and more are scheduled to be developed for the remaining fleet.
