FORT MEADE, Md. - Soldiers from Bravo Company, 53rd Signal Battalion, are basking the light of victory as one of their own helped in garnering an Army Supply Excellence Award (SEA) for 2010 during the annual Chief of Staff, Army's Combined Logistics Excellence Awards 2011 ceremony in Richmond, Va., May 12.
Sgt. Precious L. Knight, supply sergeant for Bravo, accepted the award - 2010 Winner, Active Army Unit Supply (MTOE) B Company, 53rd Signal Battalion - on behalf of the company and U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/ Army Forces Strategic Command (SMDC) from Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III.
The native of Fayetteville, N.C., said, "Our unit was hand selected to represent SMDC for having an exceptional supply program.
"When I arrived to the unit back in March of last year, I found out I would be the one to represent the unit," she said.
Knight pointed to some secrets in having a good supply program saying, "You never know how others are running their supply office.
"I put in a lot of hours to make sure that the supply room was in accordance with the regulations, so we would be ready when the inspectors came."
She was quick to acknowledge all the help she received throughout the command in preparation for the inspection.
"I've never competed for anything as big as this, and I'm just happy I was given this opportunity," Knight said.
Describing her role within Bravo Company Knight stated, "No one job is more important than the other in the unit. If I'm not functioning properly then they can't complete their mission. We all work hand in hand to complete the mission."
As an NCO, Knight has learned that you can never know enough.
"With the regulations and the way the military is always changing, you have to be willing to continue to learn and progress in your area."
Changing lives and taking care of Soldiers are what inspires her. Knight's efforts haven't gone unnoticed according to Bravo Company's 1st Sgt. Edward A. Mitchell.
"Sergeant Knight is an outstanding NCO. Her knowledge and dedication to our mission has helped to ensure our success as a unit."
Knight departs Bravo this summer for the 7th Army NCO Academy in Grafenwoehr, Germany.
The SEA was created in 1986 to recognize excellence in supply operations.
Its objectives are to enhance logistics readiness of all Army units, enforce the Command Supply Discipline Program, and provide a structure for official recognition of group and individual initiatives.
Since it began, the program has undergone continual process improvements that have expanded the opportunities for diverse supply units to compete. The cornerstone of the program remains the on-site evaluation of Army command nominated units.
