National Military Appreciation MonthWhat is it'National Military Appreciation Month started as a simple idea; to gather America around its military family to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who have served and those now serving and to know the history behind it all. Subsequent formal legislation informs our Soldiers and their service counterparts that their country has set aside an entire month to honor, remember and appreciate them. What has the Army done'The Army has recognized that National Military Appreciation Month is an opportunity for Soldiers and family members to show gratitude for the support they receive from the private sector and family members. It is also an opportunity for the private sector and family members to show support and appreciation and express "thanks" to our Army families. Many activities and events are planned at all installations and agencies. The Army intends to continue its efforts to become an integral part of their communities especially through celebrations on Armed Forces Day, May 16, and Memorial Day, May 25. All Soldiers and civilians are invited to participate in this special month and to encourage everyone to sponsor and participate in programs via multiple venues, giving the Nation a time and place upon which to focus, draw attention and express our appreciation and thanks to our military family. What continued efforts does the Army have planned'The Army will continue to actively engage the communities at large and develop partnerships wherever they can through programs such as the Army Community Covenant. They will also graciously accept and embrace the kindness that their neighbors in surrounding communities show them every day. We cannot do our important mission without the support of the people in our communities and we must ensure we foster those cordial relationships now and in the future. Why is it important to the Army'Because most holidays commemorating historical military events have become little more than three-day weekends lacking focus on their original purpose, this month is needed to remind us of the sacrifices and the history we as Americans have been privileged to participate in throughout the past 236 years. During the month of May, all commands, installations, and units are encouraged to support local engagements designed to draw public attention and illustrate public support and appreciation and thanks to the Army family.Resources: Army Community Covenant Military Appreciation Month
