FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Keeping Fort Rucker documentation up to date is essential for anyone living and working on the installation, according to Directorate of Public Safety officials.
According to U.S. Army Regulation 190-5, if a vehicle's clearance sticker is out of date, too faded to read or damaged in any way, it can be reclaimed by the installation as all stickers are officially government property.
"The public needs to know that government-issued identification cards and vehicle decals are government property that can be confiscated by law enforcement or security guards in the case that they are faded, photo copied or expired," Maj. Jay Massey, DPS deputy provost marshal, said.
A vehicle decal can also be reclaimed if it is expired, if the vehicle information doesn't match or if the vehicle appears to be violating any current security measure, Massey added.
John Tkac, Fort Rucker Physical Security chief, said all Fort Rucker security gates and the Soldier Service Center are places people can renew their decals.
"People need to keep up with their registration's expiration date," Tkac said. "We're not here to hassle people or anything, but we will be looking for that as vehicles come on post."
Weather is another factor in vehicle decals becoming unreadable, Tkac said.
"With the summer coming in and a higher amount of heat, it can cause the decals to fade out or become frayed," he said. "In that case, it would need to be replaced."
Tkac recommended renewing decals and Common Access Cards a month prior to their actual expiration. Doing this avoids the potential for forgetting to do it and then facing other problems while trying to gain access to the installation.
CACs can only be renewed at the Soldier Service Center from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tkac said. Vehicle decal renewal can be done at the three security access points from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as well as the Soldier Service Center.
