FORT STEWART Ga. - There'll be kids by the hundreds, Easter eggs by the thousands and prizes galore at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, April 23.
It's the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Family Fun Day to be held on Hunter's Squires Sports Complex fields, building 1460, and Stewart's Bennett Sports Complex fields, building 471.
At Stewart, the color and excitement of the egg hunt will be followed by a two-hour concert by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band. Sinise was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lt. Dan in the film "Forrest Gump." He named his 12-member cover band for that character.
At each post, the egg hunt is scheduled to begin promptly: 10 a.m. at Hunter and 11 a.m. at Stewart. Parents are urged to arrive at least 15 minutes early so their children can be placed for the start of the hunt.
Following are highlights of the events, all of which are free and are part of the celebration of the Month of the Military Child:
Hunter Egg Hunt: Special coupons will be placed in some of the eggs. Every child that has a coupon will receive an Easter basket or a stuffed Easter character. Also, there will be arts and crafts, games and an opportunity to take or purchase photos with the Easter Bunny. Children ages 1-10 years old are welcome to take part in the hunt. Activities begin at 10 a.m., conclude at 2 p.m.
Stewart Egg Hunt: As at Hunter, coupons for which children receive an Easter basket or stuffed Easter character will be placed in some of the eggs. Egg hunt activities will include arts and crafts, inflatable's, games, and a chance to take or purchase photos taken with the Easter Bunny. Children will be grouped in ages 0-2, 3-4, 5-7 and 8-10. The Directorate of Public Works Environmental Section will highlight with Earth Day. Egg hunt activities begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m.
The Easter Egg Hunts are a part of the observance of the Month of the Military Child. For details, call 315-9781 (Hunter) or 767-4491 (Stewart).
Lt. Dan Band Concert: Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform at Walker Field, which adjoins the site of the egg hunt, at Bennett Sports Complex. The concert is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and close at 4 p.m. The Lt. Dan Band covers everything from Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix classics to contemporary songs by Kelly Clarkson, Evanescence, Beyonce, Lonestar, the Zac Brown Band and more, including tunes from the 40's big band era.
As a long-time supporter of the U.S. military, Sinise was awarded the 2008 Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian honor.
About the Lt. Dan Band
Acclaimed actor and USO supporter Gary Sinise is criss-crossing the nation with his group, Lt. Dan Band, as part of a USO tour sponsored by TriWest Healthcare Alliance.
In February of 2004, The Lt. Dan Band hit the road on their first overseas USO tour to Korea, Singapore and Diego Garcia. Since that first overseas tour, Gary and the band have played an average of 30-40 shows per year with a good 75 percent of those shows for USO, charities or benefits.
As Gary began visiting troops around the world, people (even little kids) who didn't know him as Gary Sinise, the actor, would recognize him as "Lt. Dan" from the "Forrest Gump" film. Those in the military also seem to identify strongly with the character. And so the name for his group was an easy choice: Lt. Dan Band!
His current concert series kicked off with a show at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay and U.S. Army Base Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, Feb. 11-12. The band is scheduled to perform at Forsyth Park in Savannah, April 22.
