FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- Another U.S. Army unit now calls Fort Sam Houston home, as the 56th Signal Battalion uncased its colors in a ceremony at the post flagpole April 1.

The occasion also marked the change of responsibility for the battalion's command sergeant major.

Since its original activation in 1927, the battalion has been at many locations supporting the Army's warfighters by installing, operating, maintaining and managing defense communications, sustaining base communications and information mission services in support of U.S. Southern Command, its service components and other governmental agencies in theater.

These locations include stops in South Carolina, Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Panama, Puerto Rico and most recently at Fort Gordon, Ga.

Currently, the 56th Signal Battalion is arrayed across the United States and Central and South America in direct support of U.S. Army South and U.S. Southern Command to include the Army Signal Activity-SOUTHCOM in Miami, Fla., and smaller elements in Columbia, Honduras, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.

"This is a new beginning for our unit," said Lt. Col. Kevin L. Griggs, the battalion's commander. "Today, we are Texans.

"We are a unit in transition, Griggs added. "We haven't stayed in one spot very long, but we are always positioned to support the warfighter."

After the uncasing of the colors, another ceremony heralded the change in responsibility in the battalion's top enlisted position from Command Sgt. Maj. Lemuel L. Brock to Command Sgt. Maj. Carl S. Adams Sr.
