YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea - American military leaders participated in the annual Family Reading Night at Seoul American Elementary School March 17.
Eighth Army Commanding Geneal Lt. Gen. John D. Johnson and his wife Cheryl Johnson read the students a book about Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the Moon.
Johnson said he wanted the children to be inspired by reading because the words in a book can convey a whole different world.
"This is a great opportunity to encourage kids to read," said Johnson.
The commanding general also emphasized the importance of community involvement.
"Leaders have to set the example," said Johnson. "We should always volunteer to make this community a better place."
Johnson was joined at the event by U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Larry Wells, the deputy chief of staff of United Nations Command and U.S. Forces Korea.
Wells read a book on Astronaut Buzz Aldrin to the children.
