The U.S. Army Military District of Washington Office of the Inspector General recently took on additional responsibilities and broadened its area of supervision. The IG offices located at Fort Belvoir, Va., and Fort Meade, Md., are now part of the MDW IG office purview. To formalize that arrangement, Maj. Gen. Karl R. Horst, Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington commanding general swore in six new Inspectors General at Fort McNair, Feb. 28, 2011. The new IGs standing with Horst are Yolanda Jones, Fort McNair; Carol Tabb, Fort Meade; Kathy Morris, Fort Meade; Lt. Col. Daniel Brophy, Fort Belvoir; Sgt. 1st Class Savanya Hall, Fort McNair; and Patricia Johnson, Fort Belvoir.

For more than 200 years, Army IGs have inspected, audited, investigated, trained, and performed those duties necessary to support the Army's mission. During that time, the purpose and organization of the Army IG system have changed considerably (see History link.) The modern Army IG is an extension of the eyes, ears, voice, and conscience of the commander. The IG is a personal staff officer providing the commander a sounding board for sensitive issues. IGs are honest brokers and consummate fact finders. Their primary functions are training, inspecting, assisting, and investigating.
