FORT KNOX, Ky. (February 25, 2011) - Col. Joel T. Suenkel, the assistant chief of staff for support operations for the 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), was the guest speaker for the Fort Knox Retirement Ceremony here, Friday February 25 at the Leaders Club.

Col. Suenkel, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher J. Walton, the senior enlisted leader for Fort Knox's 19th Engineer Battalion, honored 14 Soldiers who had served 20 or more years of active federal service in the U.S. Army.

A native of Oshkosh, Wis., commended the retirees for their dedicated service and leadership during their time in uniform.

"It continually amazes me that you've answered the call of duty, especially in this era of persistent conflict," said Col. Suenkel to the retirees. "You have answered and in many cases, exceeded what your country asked of you."

Col. Suenkel said it was an honor and privilege for him being able to recognized Soldiers during their time of retirement.

He said he impressed with the amount of Family members who participated with their loved ones in the ceremony.

"The retiring Soldier's received a tremendous amount of support from their Family members during the retirement ceremony and throughout their careers," said Col. Suenkel. "Without them, the dedication these Soldiers made to this nation would not be possible."

Col. Suenkel said that he would definitely participate in a retirement ceremony again if asked. He said that just the honor of being asked to participate in the ceremony was reason enough to do it all again.
