PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The Presidio of Monterey's Residential Communities Initiative project garnered top honors from the national Professional Housing Management Association, and the project's manager, Gay Rearick, was recognized with PHMA's "Unsung Hero" award.
RCI Program Manager Patrick Kelly said both awards were presented at the annual PHMA/Army Lessons Learned and Professional Development Seminar held in New Orleans Jan. 21.
The Presidio's RCI project placed first in the competition for the PHMA's annual Top Army RCI Project for its project asset management, property management, maintenance management, financial management and development.
"I want to congratulate you on winning the top RCI Project Award," wrote Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, assistant chief of staff for Installation Management, in a note sent to the RCI team. "The RCI Program continues to be an integral part of the Army Family Covenant. Through your dedication and hard work, the quality of life for Soldiers and their Families continues to grow -- making them the true winners of this award and your efforts."
Rearick, project manager and deputy program manager, has been a member of the Presidio's RCI team since the project began in 2003. Her award was based in part on having volunteered more than 1,000 hours of her personal time to assist in family housing events hosted by RCI partners, which include the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, the Defense Commissary Agency, Army Community Service, the Presidio Chaplains Office and the Presidio Mayoral Program.
Rearick "has always been an advocate for our lower enlisted, young and less financially sound families," her award nomination states.
The goal of the PHMA, consistent with that of the RCI, is "to contribute towards better quality housing for service members and their families." According to the PHMA mission statement, the organization seeks "to continuously raise the level of proficiency and professionalism within the military services' housing profession through improved communications and networking, education and training, certification and professional recognition."
The Presidio's RCI project is organized within the Presidio's Directorate of Public Works headed by James Willison.
