FORT MONROE, Va. -- U.S. Army Installation Management Command Northeast Region conducted a command sergeant major change of responsibility ceremony Friday, Jan. 28 at the Fort Monroe, Va.
The ceremonial passing of the noncommissioned officer sword transferred responsibility as the senior enlisted advisor for the region from Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Chavez to Command Sgt. Maj. Charles E. Durr Jr., who also serves as the command sergeant major for IMCOM Southeast Region headquartered at Fort McPherson, Ga.
Both regions will relocate to Fort Eustis in July and will consolidate into a single region. The relocations are part of the Base Realignment and Closure 2005 law, which also directed the closure of Forts Monroe and McPherson.
IMCOM Region Director Russell B. Hall hosted the ceremony and in his remarks he touched on region locations and consolidation.
"You look for continuity as you make the change," Hall said of Durr's role as a key leader helping the regions through the consolidation. Hall called Chavez his battle buddy in leading the region.
"I know the strength of our NCOs through him," Hall said of Chavez and their time together.
Hall formally recognized the command sergeants major that were in attendance at the ceremony and those throughout the region by saying "they are the strength of our Army." Chavez served five years as the region command sergeant major and will retire next month.
"Life is not a race, but indeed a journey," Chavez said, reflecting on his time at the region. In his remarks, Chavez thanked God, his wife, the region directors he served, the many guests in attendance and the organizations that helped put the ceremony together, including the color guard from the 7th Sustainment Brigade and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Band.
"How about a big hoo-ah'" Durr said as he began with his remarks. The crowd of approximately 100 responded enthusiastically. He also thanked the many attendees and organizers "for all that you do in support of Army Soldiers and Families." He pledged the same passion and enthusiasm to Northeast Region that he brings to the Southeast Region.
Dignitaries attending the ceremony included Dave Tindoll, director of IMCOM Southeast Region, and Command Sgt. Maj. Neil Ciotola, IMCOM command sergeant major.
