The Army Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, was briefed on the land-based homeland defense, defense support of civil authorities and incident management in the National Capitol Region by the commanding general of the Joint Forces Headquarters National Capital Region at Fort McNair, 18 Jan., 2011.
Maj. Gen. Karl R. Horst and his staff explained the capabilities and mission of the JFHQ NCR to Lt. Gen. Daniel P. Bolger during a brief given inside the Joint Operations Center briefing room at Fort McNair.
JFHQ NCR is responsible for protecting the District of Columbia and neighboring counties and cities of Maryland and Virginia, including Loudon, Fairfax and Prince William Counties in Virginia. JFHQ NCR draws together the existing resources of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and NORAD into a single point headquarters for planning, coordination and execution of the mission in the National Capital Region.
The Army G-3/5/7 has the Army General Staff responsibility for strategy formulation, overall force development, individual and unit training policy, the functional aspects of strategic and tactical command and control systems, nuclear and chemical matters, and establishing requirements and priorities for the employment and sustenance of Army forces. Additionally, the DCS G-3/5/7 is the JCS Deputy for Army Operations and serves as the principle advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA) on joint matters, National Security Council matters, and the politico-military aspects of international affairs.
