BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - More than 248, 12-person teams took part in the Ragnar Relay, a 24-hour, 200-mile run in Cumberland, Md., Sept. 24. One team dedicated their relay run in honor of Soldiers of Task Force Lighthorse, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, TF Falcon.
"Our team name is 'Old Glories' and I thought what better way than to honor those that fight in her honor," said Marty Dollinger, sister of Sgt. Tom Dollinger, an aircraft hydraulics repairer for Troop D, TF Lighthorse, 3rd CAB, TF Falcon, both from Kersey, Pa. "We are all truly blessed there are people willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for us and this is just my small way of saying thanks."
Teams participating in the Ragnar Relay race ran from Cumberland Md., to the National Harbor in Washington, D.C., totaling 197 miles. There were three separate legs over the course of the route and two vans, carrying six runners each. They leap-frogged one another to bring runners to their portion of the race. The race began at 8 a.m., Sept. 24, and the team finished at 4:30 p.m., Sept. 25.
"The Old Glories Ragnar Relay Team would like for the Soliders of TF Lighthorse to never be in doubt that they are supported by many, many people in this country," said Marty. "Throughout our 200-mile race, both vans received many high fives, horn honks, thumbs up, smiles and words of gratitude for the troops. We got many questions about what all the ribbons meant. Our response was almost always followed up with 'that is totally awesome,' or 'they so deserve this recognition' or 'thank you for thinking of them and showing support.'"
