TACOM to begin M113 refurbishments for Iraq

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Dec. 23, 2010) -- The U.S. Army Security Assistance Command recently facilitated a Foreign Military Sales case to the government of Iraq for the procurement and refurbishment of 586 M113A2 Armored Personnel Carriers and 21 M88A1 Medium Recovery Vehicles.

The refurbishment case for about $155 million is being funded by United States Forces Iraq - Advise and Train, as part of a cost-share program with the government of Iraq.

The refurbishment work will be conducted at Anniston Army Depot, Anniston, Ala., and is scheduled to begin around Jan. 15, 2011. The work conducted at ANAD has an estimated cost of about $60 million, which includes the support equipment for the vehicles.

ANAD is currently in the early stages of production setup; the refurbishment program is expected to take 18 months.

This FMS case is a combined effort of USASAC, ANAD, USFI, and TACOM.

USASAC implements approved U.S. Army security assistance programs to more than 140 countries, Including Foreign Military Sales of defense articles, excess defense articles, and services to eligible foreign governments. USASAC manages about 4,400 FMS cases valued at more than $103 billion.
