ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - For the second consecutive year, the Aberdeen Chapter of the Association of the United States Army was awarded top regional honors, garnering 23 first-place awards, two runner-up awards and an honorable mention during the AUSA 2010 Annual Meeting and Exposition held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Oct. 25 through 27.
Army leaders on hand during the event, which drew more than 30,000 attendees, included Secretary of the Army John McHugh; Gen. George W. Casey Jr., Army Chief of Staff; and Army Sgt. Maj. Kenneth O. Preston.
Aberdeen Proving Ground leaders in attendance included Maj. Gen. Nick Justice, commander of APG and the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command; RDECOM Command Sgt. Maj. Hector Marin; Col. Orlando W. Ortiz, APG Garrison and deputy installation commander; and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney Rhoades.
Aberdeen AUSA chapter president, Mary Jane Jernigan accepted the awards on behalf of the chapter. She said that each chapter reports its activities to AUSA National which grades their efforts based on National criteria of the elements of a successful chapter. The highest grades receive annual awards for activities conducted from July 2009 to June 2010.
National views this system as a recipe for a good Chapter," Jernigan said. "If you follow their objectives and do not focus on one specific aspect, but be well rounded, then you succeed. You may not win any ribbons, but you succeed as an AUSA chapter.
"The Aberdeen AUSA would have done the exact same things because we are here for the Soldier and those who support the Soldier. We can never do enough, but we can try."
