Members of the 410th Contracting Support Brigade, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, voluntarily deployed to a neighborhood in southwest San Antonio to support a local humanitarian assistance project.
The 12 Soldiers and civilians met in the Palo Alto area in support of a Habitat for Humanity project, lending a helping hand in constructing affordable housing for a deserving family. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization working in partnership with volunteers to build simple, decent and affordable houses without interest or profit, for people in need. By the end of 2009, HFHSA built houses for 628 families in need.
"The San Antonio community has been really super to our military families," said Col. William Sanders, 410th CSB commander. "Volunteering to serve in our local community is our way of giving back to our San Antonio teammates. Our work here helped a needy family, but it also enhanced team cohesion and camaraderie within the brigade."
After receiving a safety brief the team began working on the roof, painting the inside and outside of the house and numerous other details. For many the project was fun-filled and rewarding.
This is the first of several projects where brigade members will partner with in the local community as part of the command's community relations initiatives.
"Volunteering has always very important," said Sgt. Maj. Vincent Fontenot, 410th. We volunteered when we joined the Army to serve our nation. This is just a continuation on that theme but at a local level where our community neighbors can see how much we care."
The Fort Sam Houston volunteers included; Sanders and his wife Elisabeth, Sgt. Maj. Vincent and Tammie Fontenot, Lt. Col. Lynda Royse and Maj. Carl Oelschig, from the 410th CSB; Lt. Col. Vernon Meyers, commander; Master Sgt. Eliecer Quintero; Sgt 1st Class April Johnson; and Marisol Chanis from the 916th Contingency Contracting Battalion; and Maj. Mary Levitt, 607th Senior Contingency Contracting Team.
