A treasured member of the U.S. Army Garrison-Natick family was lost Oct. 2, 2010, when Bob Happy passed away.
"He is somebody who we will truly, truly miss," said Lt. Col. Kari K. Otto, USAG-Natick garrison commander, "somebody we can't replace."
Bob, 50, was the property book officer and then chief of the Supply and Services Division of the Directorate of Logistics at Natick for the past five years. He served 25 years as a unit supply specialist with the U.S. Army National Guard. He retired in 2004 as a master sergeant.
"If something needed to get done, he just did it," said Ricky Gale of DOL. "He was a remarkable man (who) could make you his friend by a simple smile and a wish for you to have a good morning. I will truly miss my friend and will always consider myself a better person for having known him."
Many co-workers recalled Bob's many kind acts and his keen sense of humor.
"Bob was an amazing friend and co-worker," said Helen Pascarelli of DOL. "Bob cared about everyone he worked with, and it was reassuring to us all to have him in our corner. There was never a dull moment with Bob around."
His family includes his wife, Rodna M. (DiCicco) Happy; daughters Jessica M. Happy and Sarah N. Happy; a stepson, Andrew J. Welton; brother Michael Lane; sisters Cindy Rodrigues and Stormy Geovani; sisters-in-law Carla Anderson and Cheryl Prout; and nephews and nieces.
"I have known Bob for many years through the Guards and here at Natick," said Ken O'Brien of DOL. "His love for his family was unquestionable. He treated us all as his extended family. He will be deeply missed."
An avid fisherman, boater and golfer, Bob was born in Millington, Tenn., Sept. 6, 1960, the son of Robert and Glenelle (Heathe) Happy. He lived in Douglas, Mass., for 13 years. Prior to that, he was a resident of Marlborough, Mass., for more than 20 years.
But Bob made Natick seem like home to those who worked with him.
"Bob was always there for me," said Mike Ciaramicoli of the Directorate of Public Works. "He was a great mentor, and I learned so much from him in five years. He always led me in the right direction and cared about me."
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Happy," said Dale Brown of Integrated Logistics Support Center. "He was a great American."
"You hold a special place in all our hearts, and we will never forget you," said Donna Stok, DOL director. "Your legend will live on. Godspeed, Bobby."
