BAGHDAD — The Mosul Criminal Evidence Laboratory accepted a delivery of 60 Crime Scene Investigation kits Sept. 21, as part of an order placed through the Iraqi Security Forces Fund process last year.
This shipment is the third iteration of six CSI shipments totaling 1,470 CSI kits.
The order was coordinated with the Criminal Evidence Directorate and is intended for distribution to certified CSI investigators with CED laboratories, said Lt. Col. Bruce Protesto, chief of the Criminal Evidence Division with the Iraq Training and Advising Mission-Ministry of Interior.
"This is an excellent kit for CED-certified crime scene officers," Protesto said. "Officers can conduct preliminary searches with long-wave ultraviolet light for locating evidence such as fibers and stains. The kit also includes gear for collecting, marking and preserving all types of physical evidence."
"Iraq has a long history of forensic science dating back to the 1920s, when it was second only to Egypt in forensic studies in the Arab world," Protesto said. "The Iraqis are working hard to re-establish evidence-based prosecution, returning it to the level of importance it held prior to the Saddam era. These kits are a crucial component in supporting this effort and the primacy of civil authority and rule of law."
