Local band Bara Cuba set the mood at the Hispanic Heritage Month Boxing Tournament with driving rhythms. Besides welcoming people to the event, the band returned to liven up the intermission after three of the five bouts featured during the evening.

While the hometown crowd didn't get to cheer for any local boxers until after intermission, they weren't disappointed early on.

The evening opened with a boxing clinic by Ludwigshaven pugilist Prabhreet Aujl. The more-than-a-head-taller boxer in the red corner delivered a flurry of punches to the body and head of Schweinfurt's Christopher Munar who tried to defend but was repeatedly stopped for several eight counts by the ring referee. By round three, it was obvious that Munar had had enough and the referee stopped the contest.

Not unlike the first bout, the second of the evening saw the taller of the two fighters eventually taking charge. Bruchsal's Eugene Nuschny danced away from the hard-charging Carvel Wyche from Heidelberg in round one only to stun him toward the end of the round with a bloody nose and a trip to the neutral corner for an eight count. Two rounds later and several more eight counts and the referee stepped in to stop the fight giving the Bruchsal boxer the gold trophy.

GrafenwAfAPhr's Tyrone Lindsey and Bruchsal's Timofej Sperling answered the bell for bout three - a fast, hard fight that saw the shorter, but more muscular GrafenwAfAPhr boxer claim victory with a convincing three-round decision.

Wiesbaden's Travis Springer showed heart but was decidedly outmatched against Heidelberg's John Rene in bout four. With the crowd's backing, the referee quickly ended the slugfest in the first round awarding victory to Rene.

Novice boxer Michael Pennington brought the home crowd to its feet during the night's final fight versus Heidelberg's Alvin Anderson.

"He was hitting me, but I just kept pushing through it," said the Wiesbaden boxer from 102nd Signal Battalion, who said he only just started fighting the week before.

While Pennington appeared dominant throughout the fight, pummeling Anderson on the ropes repeatedly and chasing him around the ring, both fighters were staggering by the final round.

"I was thinking, just keep it going, just fight it out," said Pennington after being handed the gold trophy, looking forward to future conquests.

Heidelberg claimed the first-place team trophy followed by Bruchsal second and Wiesbaden third.
