SEOUL - Seoul's Gangnam District Office and Eighth Army co-hosted the 8th International Peace Marathon here Oct. 3.

More than 10,000 runners gathered in front of Seoul's COEX Mall, where the G-20 Summit will take place in November, to participate in the marathon.

Runners could choose from among four courses: full course (42.195 kilometer), half course, 10-kilometer course and the 5-kilometer course.

All of the money raised by the marathon will be donated to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

During his congratulatory address, Maj. Gen. Robert Williamson, 8th Army Deputy Commander, emphasized the strength and importance of ROK-U.S. Alliance.

Williamson, along with Gangnam District Mayor Shin Yeon-hee and 1992 Barcelona Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist Hwang Young-cho, finished the 5-kilometer course and encouraged fellow runners.

"This event will not only focus on wishing for a successful G-20 Summit, but I also hope to offer love to children in war and poverty throughout the world," said Mayor Shin.
