USAG ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- In October, Americans observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month by paying tribute to the accomplishments of the men and women with disabilities whose work helps keep the nation's economy strong and by reaffirming their commitment to ensure equal opportunity for all citizens.

This effort to educate the public about the issues related to disability and employment began in 1945, when Congress enacted Public Law 176, declaring the first week of October each year as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.

In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. Some 25 years later, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

In recognition of Disability Employment Awareness, the U.S. Army Garrison Rock Island EEO Office is sponsoring an information campaign of relevant topics throughout October. All organizations are welcome in sharing these topics through weekly power point presentations.

The intent of these topics is to raise awareness of not only disabilities, but also of programs utilized in helping persons with disabilities gain employment. It will also provide current employees and supervisors valued information to assist in meeting job requirements, while at the same time, link the workforce to our office and Disabilities Program Management.

Accordingly, the garrison EEO Office is holding a special speaking event from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 27 in Baylor Conf. Rm., Bldg. 103. And at the end of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, EEO will host a local speaker for a closing presentation. The final presentation titled, "The Three Legged Stool," will wrap up The National Disability Employment Awareness Month with candid and forthright information regarding the impacts of disabilities within the Army, the family and the employer.
