FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- From Oct. 4-8, post units, organizations and businesses conduct an important operation to keep Fort Rucker safe and clean.
The post-wide Fall Clean-up is part of a biannual clean-up event meant to improve the overall appearance of the installation, according to Fort Rucker Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Dwaine Walters.
"This is to get at some of those projects that we just don't have time for on a daily basis," he said. "By setting aside a week, twice a year, we as a post can improve our installation's appearance in a cost-efficient way. It is also a time that allows units to do some special projects in their footprints."
Walters said the normal efforts made to keep the post clean are good, but there's always more that can be done.
"This is just a way for people to put a little more emphasis on their unit and barracks areas," he said.
Walters said he hopes the efforts of the week-long clean-up will result in a "cleaner, more presentable post."
Monday is set aside for units and directorates to clean interior offices and work spaces while Tuesday is for improving the exterior of their buildings and offices, Walters said. Wednesday and Thursday is for Soldiers to get into their barracks and on-post housing areas.
Units will also put an extra effort into their post police call areas throughout the week.
Some unit commanders see the cleanup as more than just an opportunity to make the installation look better. It can also be a good team-building exercise.
"It really brings people together for a common goal," Capt. Cameron Albert, A Company, 1st Battalion, 13th Aviation Regiment commander, said. "The Army is a Family. This also gives Soldiers and civilians who might not have had the chance to work together before time to get to know each other and work toward a worthy cause."
