WASHINGTON, D.C. - Leveraging commercial technologies for the Army's future was what industry representatives wanted to discuss at the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association monthly luncheon at the Ritz Carlton Hotel here Sept. 27.
Maj. Gen. Nick Justice, commanding general, U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, was on hand to provide his insight.
"We need to develop cellular technology and 802-family waveforms," Justice said, referencing the effective and inexpensive means of communication technology already being developed for commercial benefit.
During the "Lightning Q & A" panel discussion, Justice offered an expanded answer to provide a bigger picture of the issue.
"Communications is only part of the discussion when we're talking about next generation Army technology," he said. "We've also got to talk about computational power and electronics, things that enable communications technology."
Comments by Justice and his fellow panel members, including Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Sorenson, the Army Chief Information Officer/G6 representative and panel moderator, were given to representatives from key companies in the communications industry, including Google, IBM, Cisco and others.
The benefit luncheon raised $25K for the National Science Center, which promotes science and mathematics education for children of all ages nationwide, and motivates young Americans to seek careers in technology and engineering.
